Our story
Plant Initiative Africa (PIA) began as a student club at Kampala International University, where a group of passionate students united around a commitment to veganism and animal welfare. This initiative soon grew into Youth for Animals and Veganism Africa (YAVA), focusing on advocating for plant-based living to improve animal welfare.
As we progressed, we recognized that the challenges facing Africa—such as climate change, food insecurity, and public health crises—required a shift in focus. We evolved from an emphasis on animal welfare to a broader mission that addressed issues more closely connected to veganism and plant-based living. This transformation led to the rebranding of YAVA as Plant Initiative Africa (PIA), reflecting our expanded mission to promote sustainable agriculture, health, climate action, and food equity across the continent.
Today, PIA is committed to fostering a healthier planet and more sustainable communities by promoting plant-based living as a key strategy. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, we empower individuals and communities to make choices that benefit both people and the environment. Our journey from a student club to a continent-wide initiative mirrors our belief in the transformative power of plant-based living.
We envision a future where nutritious, sustainable diets are accessible to all, and where the benefits of plant-based choices lead to a thriving, equitable, and resilient Africa. Join us as we continue to grow, adapt, and inspire change—one plant-based plate at a time.
